What is sports psychology, and why does it matter for athletes?
Sports psychology is the study of how thoughts, emotions, and behaviours influence athletic performance and well-being. It covers topics like motivation, focus, managing pressure, recovery from setbacks, and mental health. SE1FMADE uses evidence-based strategies derived from therapeutic models such as to help athletes build mental skills and maintain psychological well-being- key components for consistent high performance.
How is the advice in this app developed?
Our recommendations are grounded in peer-reviewed psychological research and well-established models such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. The app has been designed with input from registered psychologists, researchers, and high-performance sport practitioners to ensure the strategies are evidence-based and athlete-relevant. We also understand that the content SE1FMADE presents needs to be reliable and safe, and so we have curated a scientific library that our model will draw from to help athletes in efficient ways.
Is this a replacement for seeing a psychologist?
No. SE1FMADE is designed to complement, not replace, professional care. Instead, it is designed to open the door to psychology and provide general strategies and tools that can be accessed by every athlete in a way that brings down some of the existing barriers athletes face. We hope that this will not only increase access to sports psychology but make it easier for athletes to access sports psychology. If you are experiencing significant distress, we encourage you to connect with a psychologist, counsellor, or doctor.
How do you keep users safe?
We take psychological safety seriously. The app:

• Screens for risk indicators (e.g., severe distress) and provides tailored recommendations for seeking professional support.

• Offers clear crisis support links and helpline contacts based on your region.

• Follows strict privacy and data protection standards- your information is kept confidential and secure.

• We acknowledge that the AI space is new, and legislation is emerging within Aotearoa/New Zealand that shapes how Medical Products are regulated, and will ensure that SE1FMADE follows this.
Does this app diagnose mental health conditions?
No. The app is not a diagnostic tool. It offers education and strategies that are based on psychological science, but formal diagnosis and treatment should always be provided by a qualified health professional.
Is there evidence that this app works?
The strategies in the app are based on well-established psychological models (e.g., CBT, ACT, self-determination theory) and adapted from interventions shown to benefit athletes in research studies. We are also conducting ongoing scientific and user evaluation to ensure the app improves mental skills and well-being outcomes.
